China Open: Ones to Watch at 22/1 and 100/1...
Tuesday 23rd September 2025
The women’s China Open starts in the early hours of tomorrow morning (from 4am, UK time), and we’re having three pre-tournament selections here…
WTA Beijing is a high-grade 1000 event. As such, most of the big names are here, barring world no.1 Aryna Sabalenka. World no.2 and 2023 champion Iga Swiatek is the 11/5 (3.2) favourite. World no.3 and defending Beijing champ Coco Gauff is 6/1.
A high-profile field full of star players means we get nice, big prices for lesser-known/ up-and-coming names further down the list…
Youngsters at big prices…
Following on from last week’s Chasing Diana piece, DIANA SHNAIDER is going in the book again at a big price. The 21-year-old Russian world no.19 is 80/1 and general - and 100/1 with Betfred as I write.
Put simply, this may be the last chance we get this season to back Shnaider at such odds; this being the penultimate WTA 1000 event on the 2025 calendar. If she can get back into her groove, the left-hander has the potential to put together an outsider run here.
Diana is on Swiatek’s side of the draw, but can’t meet the top seed until the semi-final stage.
There are plenty of other Ones to Watch youngsters/ regulars on this half of the drawsheet, too…
Including 19-year-old Maya Joint (200/1, could face Shnaider in round two), Marta Kostyuk (80/1 Betfred, 66/1 gen), Linda Noskova (50/1), Clara Tauson (33/1, 28/1), Dayana Yastremska (350/1 Bet365, Skybet, Boylesports), Liudmila Samsonova (100/1 gen), and our 18-year-old WTA 1000 Montreal winner, Victoria Mboko (40/1 Betfred, 33/1 gen).
Out of all those, I’m most interested in the underdog credentials - and 50/1 price - for LINDA NOSKOVA. As with 17th seed Shnaider, 26th seed Noskova gets a bye through to round two, where she will face one of two Chinese wildcards - both of whom are ranked outside the world’s top 150…
Come through that opener, and the 20-year-old Czech, who featured prominently in our pre-season 2025 report, could face last year’s beaten Beijing semi-finalist, Qinwen Zheng…
That potential match-up still very much an ‘if’ for me right now though, as world no.9 Zheng is making her first appearance since losing in the 1st round at Wimbledon in July; this is the Chinese no.1’s first tournament back from injury following elbow surgery. Any rust or fitness struggles for Zheng, and world no.27 Noskova could take advantage.
With the Outright prices 50/1 Noskova and 20/1 Zheng in general, I know who I’d rather be on from day one.
Paolini arrives on a high…
In the bottom half of the draw, things look more open (eg. no Swiatek). Gauff’s serving issues continue to make her a vulnerable favourite in my eyes. Elena Rybakina (8/1) is threatening to get back into top-level form, but the fact remains she has only made one final all year, and that was on clay back in May…
Third seed Amanda Anisimova is riding high after reaching back-to-back Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open this summer. But that leap forward is reflected in short prices here, with the 24-year-old American priced at just 9/1 for the trophy. In comparison, she was 22/1 in New York, 33/1 at SW19… and 50/1 when winning the WTA 1000 title in Doha in February.
Rising star Iva Jovic is 66/1 at best and 50/1 in general, but the 17-year-old American will have to beat a much higher calibre of opponent here in Beijing than she did when en-route to winning a first senior title at the WTA 500 in Mexico the other week.
Paula Badosa (100/1+) is a former world no.2, and was in the semi finals here last year. But the 27-year-old Spaniard is also on the comeback - yet again - from injury.
Twelve months ago Karolina Muchova (25/1) made the final here in China, finishing runner-up, straight after reaching the US Open semis. This time, the 29-year-old Czech arrives on the back of a quarter-final run in the States. Fitness concerns continue to linger though, and Muchova would have to go through the likes of Badosa and Anisimova, to name just two, to get to the quarter finals here…
Which all leads me to our old friend, JASMINE PAOLINI. The smiley Italian has just enjoyed trophy-winning success for her country at the Billie Jean King Cup, winning all four of her matches in that international team event. The 2024 French Open and Wimbledon finalist has won at WTA 1000 level before, and the 29-year-old world no.8 is one of the most energetic ladies on the tour. That last point could count for a lot at this stage of the season.
I like Paolini’s draw here, and can see her making good progress through to the quarter finals - and beyond. Odds of 22/1 Each Way could end up looking good if the 6th seed goes deep here…
