One to Watch at 50/1 – and win French Open tickets…
Monday 20th May 2019
In your Ones to Watch EXTRA email today:
One week to go…
This time next week, the French Open 2019 will be underway. The action starts in Paris on Sunday. Time to step up our preparations for the annual clay-court Grand Slam at Roland Garros…
Last time out we got Anett Kontaveit in the book as One to Watch for the Women’s French Open at 50/1.
The women’s event looks a lot more open than the men’s, and we’re adding another big-price outsider to our early French Open picks today…
Marketa at 50/1…
Marketa Vondrousova appeared on our Ones to Watch in 2018 list, as an 18-year-old.
It’s not been uncommon for some of our young Ones to Watch players to make the big-time the season after we originally flagged them up…
The biggest example of that would be Naomi Osaka – who appeared on our 2017 list, then went on to win the US Open 2018… then the Australian Open 2019… and is now World No.1. Not many people – if anyone – saw that big leap coming.
Our current Ones to Watch in 2019 list may yet deliver a couple of Grand Slam payouts. Right now, I’d say that Maria Sakkari, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev are the three to look out for in particular at the French Open next week.
Going back to Vondrousova…
The Czech left-hander is still in her teens (she doesn’t turn 20 until the end of June). And this season Marketa has really started to push on, reaching a current career-high of No.38 in the rankings.
Her recent tournament form makes very good reading. Since the Australian Open at the start of the year, Vondrousova has played five tournaments on the WTA Tour and reached two finals and three quarter finals.
Overall, the 19-year-old has an impressive match record of won 22 lost 6 this season. That includes a 7-2 win-loss record on clay.
For her career to date, clay is Vondrousova’s ‘most winningest’ surface, with a 66-19 win-loss that equates to an eye-catching 78% win-rate.
At last year’s US Open, Marketa was one match off the quarter finals (Round of 16). Her 2019 progress suggests she is ready to make a Grand Slam impact soon. The French Open on clay looks a good opportunity for the talented left-hander to make the breakthrough, at odds of 50/1 and 40/1.
Last week at the Premier event in Rome, Vondrousova beat current World No.3, Simona Halep. A win over the 2019 French Open favourite & reigning French Open champion is as good as sign as any that Marketa can pose a real threat at Roland Garros.
