French Open: Teenage replacement at 200/1…

French Open – Email #2

I hope you had a good Bank Holiday weekend. I went from almost getting sunburn on Saturday, to reaching for the raincoat on Sunday…

The rain has set in for the opening few days in Paris. That means that on the match front, we’re not missing out on much right now.

As I sat down to write this Tuesday afternoon, the only play was on the two feature courts with retractable roofs. If it wasn’t for the under-cover capabilities of Court Philippe-Chatrier and Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Eurosport would be stuck showing replays, or talking ‘British chances’ with Tim Henman…

As I outlined at length last week (here, and then here), our main Ones to Watch business at the French Open 2024 is in the tournament Outright Winner markets…

On the opening weekend at Roland Garros, a total of 256 men & women lined-up in the singles draws…

In Email #1 on Friday, before a ball had been hit, I sent out my big-odds, Each Way picks. Adding to our two early-bird women’s selections who were already in the book, Jasmine Paolini and Danielle Collins…

Giving us a total of six players, equating to just 2.34% of the overall field of competitors. And at the prices we go for, it only takes one…

Sticking to our longstanding statement of intent in these markets:

We back appealing outsiders at appealing Each Way prices…

We have four out of six through to round two so far. With Victoria Azarenka still waiting to step out on court for her 1st round match. And 20-year-old, 500/1 speculation Diana Shnaider falling at the first hurdle, to a 4/1 pre-match underdog, no less.

Our open, Outright book looks like this right now (advised prices in brackets):

MEN
Tommy Paul (150/1 – 100/1)
Hubert Hurkacz (100/1)

WOMEN
Jasmine Paolini (200/1 – 100/1)
Danielle Collins (35/1 – 20/1)
Victoria Azarenka (250/1 – 100/1)

You can read more about all of those picks in my full tournament preview in Email #1, here.

Let’s get Linda in the book…

Diana Shnaider was our only casualty over the opening weekend. The 20-year-old Russian had featured in your pre-season Ones to Watch report, when she was still in her teens. I want to fill her place in our French Open women’s book with another Ones to Watch youngster today. And that’s 19-year-old Czech rising star, Linda Noskova

As I stated in that 2024 report, I like Noskova enough to have already backed the teenager a few times at big prices for big tournaments. Young Linda did us proud as a 100/1 shot at the Australian Open in January, reaching a maiden Grand Slam quarter final, and knocking out world no.1 Iga Swiatek along the way (a matchday upset that was a 10/1 shot on its own)…

Ones of the things I like about Noskova is her calm-looking on-court demeanour, which, coupled with a dialled-in big-match mentality, makes her a contender for big trophies. Whether that’s this season while she’s still a relative rookie on the tour – or in years to come, when her tournament prices will most likely have dropped, as she climbs the rankings…

Noskova was ranked no.41 when we backed her for the Australian Open. The talented teenager is now up to no.29…

On Monday, Linda came through her 1st round encounter with Britain’s Harriet Dart in straight sets, 2-0. And she looked good. With that first Roland Garros 2024 match under her belt, the Czech teenager can now push on. With the opportunity and ability to make a real dent in the draw here in Paris – just as she did in Melbourne at the last Grand Slam…

As I’ve said before, Noskova in one of the latest in a long line of female Czech players, all good enough to challenge for Major honours. Last season alone, two of the four Grand Slams saw Czech finalists – with Marketa Vondrousova winning Wimbledon, and Karolina Muchova the runner-up here at the French Open. Those two went off at starting prices of 150/1 and 100/1, respectively. We can get 200/1 – 100/1 for Noskova today.

  • 3 of the last 10 women’s French Open finalists have been from Czechia. Including the surprise 2021 champion Barbora Krejcikova, who won at odds of 175/1

I’ve got plenty more to say about both the women’s and the men’s tournaments. Look out for your next French Open email from me on Friday – or before, if I have an urgent price, player, or match-betting opportunity to alert you to.
